Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of shaping your content so that search engines and assistants can lift a direct answer from it — in a featured snippet, a "People also ask" box, a voice assistant reply or an AI-written summary. Its core skill is simple to state and hard to do well: find the exact questions your audience asks and answer each one clearly, accurately and early on the page.
Where AEO came from
AEO predates generative AI. The term gained traction when Google began showing featured snippets and when voice assistants started reading a single answer aloud. Both rewarded pages that answered a question in a tight, self-contained passage. Generative AI search has widened the same idea: instead of one quoted snippet, an answer may now be built from several sources, but each source still contributes a usable passage.
So AEO focuses less on reputation and off-site signals and more on the answer itself — its wording, format and placement.
AEO, SEO and GEO compared
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main goal | Rank pages in search results | Supply the direct answer to a question | Be referenced in AI-generated answers |
| Unit of work | The page | The question-and-answer passage | The topic and the sources around it |
| Key activities | Technical health, relevance, links | Question research, answer writing, formatting | Answer audits, source analysis, reputation |
| Typical output | Visits | Visibility in answer features, sometimes visits | Mentions and citations, sometimes visits |
The three overlap heavily, and one page can serve all three. Our practical guide to GEO covers the wider, source-focused process; this article focuses on the answers themselves.
Finding the questions
Good AEO starts with question research rather than keyword lists. Useful sources include:
- Your inbox and WhatsApp. The questions customers send before buying are the most valuable list you have. Note the exact wording, including Arabic or mixed-language phrasing.
- "People also ask". Expand these boxes for your main topics; each answer you open reveals more questions.
- Search Console. Filter queries that begin with how, what, why, which, can or is. Long queries are often questions in disguise.
- Sales and support staff. Ask for the ten questions they answer most often.
Keyword research for UAE search intent explains how to judge which questions carry commercial value and which are purely informational.
Matching the answer format to the question
Different questions expect different shapes of answer. Getting the shape right is often the difference between being usable and being skipped.
| Question type | Expected answer shape | Example opening |
|---|---|---|
| What is… | A one or two sentence definition, then detail | "A trade licence is the permit that allows a company to operate a specific activity in the UAE…" |
| How do I… | Numbered steps, each starting with a verb | "1. Choose your activity. 2. Reserve a trade name…" |
| How much / how long… | The honest range or the factors that decide it | "Cost depends on three things: the authority, the activity and visa quota…" |
| Which is better… | Decision criteria, often a comparison table | "Choose a free zone if…; choose mainland if…" |
| Can I / is it allowed… | Yes, no or "it depends", then conditions and the authority to check with | "Usually yes, provided…; confirm with the relevant authority." |
Two cautions apply. First, never invent numbers to make an answer look precise; explain the factors and how to work the figure out. Second, for regulated topics in the UAE — healthcare, finance, legal, property, advertising permits — keep answers high level and point readers to the official authority, because rules change.
Writing the answer block
A reliable pattern is: question as a heading, direct answer in the first sentence or two, then supporting detail. For example, under a heading "Do I need an office to get a mainland licence in Dubai?", the first sentence should give the answer and its main condition, and the paragraphs below should explain the options and exceptions.
Keep the answer in plain HTML text. Answers inside images, PDFs or widgets that load only after a click are harder for every engine to use.
A note on FAQ markup
FAQPage structured data is still valid schema, but since 2023 Google has shown FAQ rich results only for a limited set of well-known, authoritative government and health websites. Adding the markup will not usually produce the expandable display, and it does not guarantee your answers are used anywhere. Write the visible question-and-answer content well first; see what schema markup can and can't do before investing time in markup.
Common AEO mistakes
- Answering a different question. The heading asks "how long" and the paragraph explains "why".
- Burying the answer. Context first, answer last, is the reverse of what works.
- Hedging everything. "It depends" is fine only if you then say what it depends on.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO the same as optimising for voice search?
Voice was one driver of AEO, but the same clear answers serve snippets, voice replies and AI summaries.
Will AEO guarantee a featured snippet?
No. Search engines decide which passage to show, and that can change from day to day. AEO improves the quality of what you offer them.
Key takeaways
- AEO is about supplying the clearest direct answer to a real question.
- Research questions from customer conversations, not just keyword tools.
- Match the answer format to the question type and put the answer first.
- Markup is secondary to well-written visible content.
