Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO): A Practical Guide

GEO is a repeatable process, not a trick. This guide sets out the six-step loop we use to study AI answers in your market, find why competitors get referenced, and close the gaps.

Generative engine optimisation (GEO) is the practice of improving how often and how accurately AI systems that write answers — such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Gemini and Perplexity — draw on and reference your content. In practice it is a loop: decide which questions matter, record what the AI tools say today, work out why certain sources are used, improve your pages and off-site presence, then check again. This guide sets out that loop step by step.

The term comes from a 2023 academic paper on how content changes affect visibility in generative search responses. If you want the wider context of how it sits alongside other labels, start with AI SEO for UAE businesses; this article stays on the method.

Step 1: Build a question set

Your question set is the list of prompts you will monitor. It should reflect how buyers actually ask, not how you describe yourself.

Pull questions from:

  • Sales calls, enquiry forms and WhatsApp conversations
  • "People also ask" boxes and Search Console queries
  • Your own service pages, rephrased as a customer would put them

Group them by stage. A hypothetical Dubai corporate-services firm might end up with:

Stage Example question
Problem What licence do I need to sell services online in Dubai?
Options Free zone or mainland company for a two-person consultancy?
Shortlist Which business setup consultants in Dubai handle bank account opening?
Decision What documents do I need to start a free zone application?

Thirty to fifty questions is a workable start, including Arabic versions where your customers ask in Arabic.

Step 2: Record a baseline

Run each question through the AI tools your customers are likely to use. For each answer, log:

  • Whether your brand is mentioned, and how accurately
  • Which competitors are mentioned
  • Which URLs are cited or linked
  • The date, tool and exact wording used

AI answers are not stable. The same question can produce different answers an hour apart, and results can depend on location, signed-in state and conversation history. Run important questions more than once and look at patterns, not individual responses. Our guide to measuring AI search visibility covers how to keep this log consistent.

Step 3: Diagnose the source gaps

This is where GEO earns its keep. Look at the cited sources and sort them into types:

  • Your competitors' own pages — what do those pages say that yours do not?
  • Third-party lists and comparisons — "best X in Dubai" articles, directories, marketplace listings
  • Community content — forums, Reddit threads, Q&A sites
  • Official sources — government portals, regulators, free zone authorities

Each type points to a different fix. If competitors' service pages are cited, the gap is usually content: they answer the question directly and you do not. If third-party lists dominate, the gap is off-site reputation. If official sources dominate, the question may be informational, and the best you can do is be the clearest practical explainer that links to those sources.

Step 4: Fix your own pages

For every question where your page should be a credible source but is not used, check the page against these points:

  1. Does a passage on the page answer the question directly, in plain language, near the top of a section?
  2. Is the answer specific — names, steps, conditions, timelines — rather than general marketing copy?
  3. Can the passage be understood without reading the rest of the page?
  4. Is the page indexable, and does the content load as text rather than inside images or scripts?
  5. Is it obvious who wrote or stands behind it, and when it was last updated?

The detailed writing techniques are in how to structure content so AI answers can use it. One strong page covering a cluster of related questions usually beats a thin page per question.

Step 5: Work on off-site sources

Where third-party content drives the answers, you need to be present and accurately described in those sources. That might mean correcting outdated directory listings, contributing expert comment to industry publications, appearing on podcasts, or encouraging satisfied customers to leave reviews on the platforms your market uses. Brand mentions and digital authority goes deeper on this.

Do not pay for placements disguised as independent recommendations, and do not create fake reviews or forum posts. Beyond the ethical problem, these tactics breach platform policies and, in the UAE, can raise consumer protection and advertising compliance issues.

Step 6: Re-check on a schedule

Repeat the baseline monthly or quarterly using the same questions, tools and method. Compare mention rates and accuracy, not single answers. Alongside this, watch referral traffic from AI tools in GA4 and impressions in Search Console, and use a clear SEO reporting framework so GEO sits within your wider search reporting rather than in a separate silo.

What GEO cannot do

GEO improves your odds; it does not control outcomes. No one can guarantee that an AI platform will cite you, and the platforms change how they select sources without notice. Google's guidance is that its AI features rely on the same fundamentals as Search, with no special requirements to be eligible. Treat any promise of guaranteed inclusion as a warning sign.

Key takeaways

  • GEO is a loop: question set, baseline, source diagnosis, page fixes, off-site work, re-check.
  • The diagnosis step matters most — the type of source being cited tells you what to fix.
  • Measure patterns over many questions and repeated checks, not single answers.
  • Nothing in GEO guarantees citation; it improves the quality of the evidence AI tools can find about you.
